Drill bit costs cut dramatically Recent testing being conducted on IDCT Microdrilling Systems’ 275K RPM spindle points to greatly reduced drill bit consumption. Initial results indicate that carbide drill bits can last anywhere from two to four times as long, due to reduced vibration and run-out, as compared to competitive spindles. Drill bits represent a large percentage of the total cost of producing printed circuit boards. Just how large is surprising; the actual savings in drill bit costs on an IDCT LP Series driller can approach $200,000 per year per machine, based upon the average drill bit consumption in a production facility running three shifts. "The cost of a drilling machine goes far beyond the initial purchase price", says Steve Egerer, Product Sales and Marketing Manager. "In today’s competitive environment, companies are beginning to examine their cost basis more closely, and this is a significant recurring cost which has been largely overlooked until now." A customer in Asia recently committed to taking delivery of at least thirty-six LP Series machines over the next eighteen months based upon this return on investment model.
